Jul 14, 2014 · I have the GS4 on AT&T with 4.4.2. Previously on 4.3. When it was running 4.3, I performed the full encryption and on 4.4.2, I used the Fast Encryption option. I did not notice any big performance hit from encrypting my device. I'm sure there were (but I have not measured it), but it has not prevented my phone from being unusable.
Do you have a phone featuring hardware backed encryption? (Snapdragon 805+, not sure about exynos or tegra). If you do, you won't really suffer a performance hit. Make sure you back up your userdata prior to encrypting. It's a bit buggy for the mi5, where the process just removes user data prior to encrypting the device.
